Ziaire Williams looked more at ease in his second NBA Summer League game, but it was his diet off the field that garnered more attention.
Williams scored a team-high 19 points Memphis Grizzly’97-94 double overtime loss to the Miami Heat on Wednesday. But on the NBA TV show, Grizzlies announcer Pete Pranica said Williams is eating 5,000 calories a day.
When the Grizzlies introduced him, Williams said he ate so much to add strength to his 6-foot-8, 185-pound frame. For the curious, the recommended daily calorie intake for men is 2,500 calories.
If the stomachs race when Williams eats twice as much, that’s understandable. The extra food, however, didn’t detract from his performance in the Grizzlies’ first loss to Las Vegas, which ended on a 3-point Max Strus in sudden death.
Ziaire Williams has been improving since his debut
Williams showed better touch of the shot by scoring four 3s, including a pair in the fourth quarter. He finished 6 for 10 on the field while adding two rebounds and two steals.

He also showed a good touch on a second float and seemed more comfortable despite six faults. After a low scoring start on Monday, Williams’ game two showed a lot more of the versatile scorer than the Grizzlies imagine he can be.
The first fights of Santi Aldama
Santi Aldama went 1v7 in his first game on Monday. It didn’t improve much on Wednesday, the Grizzlies’ other first-round pick.
Aldama took the start but shot 1 for 9, including 0 for 5 on 3 points. He was also on the wrong side of a poster dunk in the third quarter.
It is too early to make instant judgments as he is still getting used to his teammates. However, in two games, Aldama has not found its rhythm on the field.
Tillman, the creator
Xavier Tillman Sr. and Desmond Bane both used the summer league to show leadership, but they were also good hosts as well as scorers. Bane, in fact, played point guard in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
Tillman had seven assists on Monday and followed with seven others, the team’s top, with 14 points. Bane had 16 points and four assists.
Killian Tillie leaves injured
Killian Tillie had another solid game (nine points) but in the fourth quarter he slipped down and lost a bit.
He came slowly and seemed to be holding his groin. He tried to take it off but checked and didn’t come back. Grizzlies assistant Darko Rajakovic said Tillie is still being assessed and his status for Friday’s game is yet to be determined.
The Grizzlies return to play Friday against the Sacramento Kings (8 p.m., ESPNU)
