The playoff race begins to heat up as the USFL enters Week 7. Two of the league’s teams have game-breaking scenarios that will guarantee a trip to Canton, Ohio for the USFL playoffs if they can win. wins this weekend.
The New Jersey Generals need only beat the Tampa Bay Bandits and they’ll clinch one of two North Division playoff spots. The generals can also guarantee passage to Canton if they lose and the Michigan Panthers and Pittsburgh Maulers also lose.
Meanwhile, the still-unbeaten Birmingham Stallions can clinch one of two Southern Division playoff spots if they win and get some help. The Stallions need to beat the Maulers, who have the worst offense in the NFL, but they also need the Bandits to lose to the Generals. So the Stallion faithful will be shooting for the Generals when Week 7 kicks off on Saturday afternoon.

Here’s how to watch the two USFL games that will be played on Saturday.
Generals versus bandits
The Generals are well positioned to clinch a playoff berth if all goes well for them in Week 7. All they have to do is win – or watch the Maulers and Panthers both lose – and they will participate in the post-season tournament. However, quarterback De’Andre Johnson left last week’s game with a knee injury, so they will be counting on Luis Perez to take them to that position.
New Jersey has top-notch defense and allowed the second-fewest points in the league this season at 105. The Generals will have to bring their A-game to that side of the ball, as the Bandits have the third-fewest points. in the USFL at 112. Jordan Ta’amu and Co. have been playing better lately, however, and Tampa Bay is desperate for a win to keep pace with the Breakers in the South Division playoff race. As such, this could end up being the showpiece battle of the week.
Breakers vs. Panthers
Speaking of New Orleans, the Breakers have the No. 1 defense in the league and play against a Panthers team that has averaged just 17.3 points per game. This is the second minus in the USFL. Complicating matters further is the fact that Michigan just cut their starting quarterback, Shea Patterson, and will have to rely on either Josh Love or Paxton Lynch to lead their passing game.
The Panthers have a good running game, but that may not allow them to keep up with a New Orleans offense that leads the league in passing yards. The Breakers have Kyle Sloter and if he’s healthy, he could give the Panthers some defensive shots. Otherwise, it will be Zach Smith’s show with Patterson serving as the new replacement.
The Breakers are coming off a 10-point victory over the Maulers which saw them chase the ball more frequently than they have in recent weeks. Meanwhile, the Panthers are coming off a loss to the undefeated Stallions. The Panthers have only one win this season, a 24-0 shutout against the Maulers.
USFL Sunday Game TV Channels, Live Streams
Here’s how to watch the two USFL games that will be played on Sunday.
Stallions against Maulers
It may be the most lopsided game in the short history of the new USFL. The Stallions are still undefeated and have moved two quarterbacks – J’Mar Smith and Alex McGough – to a 6-0 record. Their defense is solid and Bo Scarbrough played very well last week to help the running game.
As for the Maulers, they are the only USFL team that was ruled out and scored a league-low 76 points. Birmingham, by comparison, has a record 162. Vad Lee has been better for Pittsburgh at quarterback than Josh Love and Kyle Lauletta, but they probably don’t have enough firepower to keep up with the Stallions.
Plus, the Stallions can clinch a playoff spot with a win, so they have every incentive to beat the Maulers in this one.
Stars vs Players
- To start up: 6 p.m. ET
- Direct: Peacock
The Stars and Gamblers have the two worst defenses in the USFL. That means this contest should be a high game, especially since the Stars are very fond of throwing the ball around with Case Cookus.
Philadelphia will be a happy offense and that will allow Chris Odom — who leads the USFL with eight sacks — to potentially hit double-digit sacks in this game. On the other side of the ball, the Stars struggled on the run, so Gamblers running back Mark Thompson will have to perform well in this one.
The Gamblers have, incredibly, lost a second-half lead in five straight games and lost them all. In three consecutive weeks, they have lost in a draw with 10 seconds or less remaining. Each of Houston’s last two losses has come in the last regulation game.
